CAR1 - 1965 Indy 500 Winner - Clark #87
Jim Clark returned to the Brickyard® in '65 to place his Lotus 38 on the front row with Dan Gurney (Item#5203) and A.J. Foyt. Clark had been beaten to the pole by Foyt in an updated Lotus 34. This defeat began a duel that would leave the rest of the field behind. Lap after lap, the two determined drivers vied for position. Foyt's challenge ended at Lap 116 and there was no one putting the heat on Clark. Clark drove #82 to a walk-away victory at a record speed of 150.686 mph. It was the first Indianapolis victory for a rear-engine car, the first for a British car, and the first for a foreign driver in almost 50 years!
The Lotus 38 that Jim Clark drove to victory in the 1965 Indianapolis 500® is one of the most famous racing cars in history. We invite you to examine and see that this Carousel 1 model is almost as realistic as the real Lotus racer. Carousel 1 matched the model’s green and yellow paint to the restored #83 (housed in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum®), and the red cockpit “leather” is matched to a bit of the original upholstery.
