CAR1 - 1968 Indy 500 - Hill #70

Colin Chapman led the "British Invasion" at the Brickyard® from 1963 through 1968 with some of the greatest drivers and most exciting cars ever to participate in the Indianapolis 500®. The delicate Lotus Type 29 - the lumpy Lotus Type 34-the revolutionary Lotus Type 56 turbine-and most of all, the elegant Lotus Type 38, the first rear-engine car ever to win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In addition to Jim Clark, some of the greatest racing champions of all time drove Lotus cars at the Speedway, even though they didn't win the 500 in a Lotus. Dan Gurney - A.J. Foyt - Al Unser, Sr. - Parnelli Jones - Graham Hill - Joe Leonard, and many more.

Team Lotus recruited Graham Hill to lead their 1968 campaign at the Indianapolis 500®. Hill set a qualifying record average speed of 171.208 mph, only to be bumped to second spot four hours later by Joe Leonard, driving a similar Lotus 56. Racing journalists picked 1966 Indy winner Hill as the favorite to win the race. In early race action, Leonard contested the lead with Bobby Unser, while Hill ran among the top five cars. On Lap 111, Hill's Lotus broke its right-front suspension coming out of Turn 2, sliding along the wall. Hill was not injured, and he was scored as the 19th place finisher. Bobby Unser won the 1968 Indianapolis 500.
